Top Things to Consider When Planning a Mead Tasting in 2025

As mead gains popularity in the United States, consumers who have never tasted mead may feel intimidated by the prospect of purchasing a bottle. With more mead options appearing on shelves in local craft beer and wine stores, it’s worth exploring this delicious beverage, which varies from dry to sweet depending on the style and maker.

If you’ve never tried mead and are planning a tasting at Clear Skies, we invite you to join us. We’ll assist you every step of the way. We recommend choosing a tasting flight of either four or five meads per person. Each taster cup is about two ounces, equivalent to half a glass of wine. If you’re tasting with a partner or friend, you can sample multiple flavors together.

4 things to keep in mind to ensure you arrange the perfect mead tasting:

  1. Mead Selection

At Clear Skies, we offer 20 different meads on tap, ranging from dry to semi-sweet and sweet, including light session meads and robust full-strength options. Be sure to try our flagship traditional dry mead, Freinding Fenrir, which showcases a clean honey wine without added fruits or spices. Choose a couple of fruit and spiced meads to build your flight, selecting flavors of fruits and herbs you enjoy to better discern the differences in post-fermentation.

  1. Food Pairing with Your Mead

Food plays a crucial role in human sustenance, shaping our cultural identities. Since ancient times, food and wine have held historical and religious significance. Pairing food with mead can enhance flavors and create a more enjoyable experience. The right pairing elevates the overall dining experience, transforming an ordinary meal into something extraordinary. Proper pairings balance flavors, ensuring that one element doesn’t overwhelm the other, often by matching intensities or contrasting flavors.

Acidity and Fat: Wines with high acidity complement rich, fatty foods, while low-acidity wines pair well with lighter dishes.

Sweetness and Acidity: Sweet wines can balance food acidity and vice versa.

Salt and Wine: Salty foods can enhance the fruitiness and fullness of wine.

At Clear Skies, we offer a limited selection of foods, including charcuterie and cheese plates and hummus served with carrots and celery.

One of our favorite events at Clear Skies is our collaboration with Jill Sandler of “The Chocolatier’s Palette.” Jill crafts artisanal fudge designed to enhance our seasonal brews. Stay tuned for the next event—they’re truly unforgettable!

  1. Take It Slow!

A tasting event is about more than sampling as many meads as possible. If you’ve attended a beer or wine festival with unlimited sampling, you may have experienced “palate fatigue,” where subtle differences between products get lost in a generic mix of flavors. It can be exhausting to focus on each drink, especially as the alcohol effects kick in! To truly appreciate our mead, select a few that interest you and savor them. Pair sips with different bites of food, note the flavors as the meads warm, and share your experiences with friends and your bartender. Your taste buds will thank you!

  1. Get Educated
Each mead has a unique story, from its historical inspiration to the ingredients and brewing challenges behind it. Exploring these elements—whether through research or conversations with our staff—will deepen your appreciation for what you’re tasting and elevate your mead-tasting experience.

Whether you’re interested in organizing a mead tasting at Clear Skies or in your own home, our staff is eager to ensure you have a great time! There’s no better way to celebrate the rich history and bright future of honey wine than by enjoying it with friends and loved ones. Visit our website to discover the diverse flavors of our meads.
