What is ABV and does it affect Meads' Taste

Mead is the oldest and most ancient drink known to people, but what is ABV? ABV, or Alcohol by Volume, defines the presence of alcohol in any beverage. It is a global standard measurement that allows access to the strength of alcohol. The higher the ABV, the more alcohol is in the drink. Though it is present in all beverages containing alcohol, the percentage differs. Wine falls in the category of 12.5-13.5%, commercial drinks like Vodka and Rum consist of somewhere around 40%; beer possesses 4.5% ABV; and meads somewhere between 3-20%.

Now that you have a fair idea about the ABV presence, here is how taste gets affected due to ABV.

Process

In the case of mead, ABV varies depending on factors like the amount of honey used, the yeast strain, and the fermentation process. Usually, the ABV ranges from 3%-20%, and in some cases, it might exceed this range. Hence, the addition of elements affects the process, and taste can be defined post-fermentation process.

Perceived Sweetness

One of the noticeable ways that ABV can impact mead’s perceived sweetness. Meads with high ABV have a drier taste, leaving a less sweet taste on the palate and more alcohol warmth. The reason behind the change in taste is – yeast consumes more sugar during the fermentation process, resulting in such a taste.

Conversely, meads with lower ABV may retain more residual sweetness, providing a sweeter and smoother taste. This is because the yeast has consumed fewer sugars during fermentation, leaving sweetness in the final product.

Light and Heavy Taste

ABV can influence the taste of mead through its body and mouthfeel. Meads that are high in ABV often have a fuller body and a more robust mouthfeel, while lower ABV meads may feel lighter and more delicate on the palate.

It’s also important to note that the alcohol content can affect the overall balance of flavors in mead. A well-balanced mead will have harmony between sweetness, acidity, and alcohol, with none of these elements overpowering the others. However, if the ABV is too high, it may dominate the flavor profile and mask other nuances in the mead.

ABV plays a significant role in shaping the taste of mead. From sweetness to maintaining balance, the alcohol content can have a noticeable impact on the drinking experience. Whether you prefer a drier, higher ABV mead or a sweeter, lower ABV version, understanding how ABV affects mead’s taste can help you appreciate the wide range of flavors that mead has to offer.
